Company Profile
Department store
Located on Lambton Quay, the capital's main shopping street, the store is instantly recognisable as the city's and probably the country's premier department store. The facade of the building has retained an elegance of architecture that reflects the flair and quality of the merchandise inside.
The store is made up of three retail levels with a total floor area of almost 4,000 square metres. It is organised on traditional lines with a single manager or buyer responsible for the purchasing and selling in each department.
The wide range of merchandise encompasses commodity items through to exclusive lines of the world's most famous marques such as Waterford crystal. In particular the cosmetic department represents instantly recognisable names like Estee Lauder, Clinique, Shiseido and Lancome and Mac. Many high profile local brands are also on offer including Jane Daniels and Ashley Fogel fashions, Martinborough wines and Rembrandt suits.
The emphasis throughout the store is on quality of product and service. Kirkcaldie & Stains has a general policy of competitive pricing of merchandise and is proud of offering value for money even on the most exclusive of lines. The after sales service ranks second to none and includes a "no questions asked" refund or replacement policy.
Atmosphere, ambience, magic
There is still something very appealing about a full range of merchandise in a single location and there is an atmosphere that can be created in a department store that cannot exist in a smaller shop. Kirkcaldie & Stains cultivates its own ambience in many ways.
Live music regularly entertains customers. On weekday lunchtimes waltzes and ballads come from the Bechstein grand piano on the second floor. At other times choirs, brass bands and string ensembles take their turn to fit the music to the mood and season.
Some old traditions are kept alive and well within the store. Staff are still referred to by their surnames and always make the effort to address customers by name. Cages of live birds are a favourite with old and young alike. Special services such as the wedding and gift registry provide the personal touch that is important to both customer and store in building relationships and rapport.
Stores within the store
Kirkcaldie & Stains sublets space within the store for specialist shops. which include Mecca Cosmetica, Rodd & Gunn, Witchery, Crabtree & Everlyn and Scent Floral Boutique. Also sub-contracted are the cafe on the second floor and the beauty salon.
Promotions
Kirkcaldie & Stains hosts special events throughout the year that provide additional service to its customers and support the local community. Evening functions included wine tasting, demonstrations and launches of new products. Two charity evenings are held each year. Proceeds from the sale of entry tickets go to the charity with the incentive of discounts on all purchases throughout the store.
The store holds twice-yearly sales at the end of the summer and winter seasons. Kirkcaldie & Stains is famous for its genuine marked-down prices and attracts customers from far and wide especially for the first day of each sale week.
Behind the scenes
In addition to the retail space, there are hundreds of square metres of reserve stock rooms discretely located within the store and in the Harbour City Centre. Reserves are kept close at hand in order to meet customer requirements as quickly as possible and enable buyers to maintain tight inventory control.
A compact despatch and receiving area on Brandon Street is busy and a feat of logistical organisation. It is the sole point of entry of millions of dollars worth of stock into the store and the point of departure for all goods that are delivered locally or mailed overseas. Kirkcaldie & Stains offers GST free trading where goods are sent directly offshore on behalf of customers.
Personnel
In today's commercial environment, retailing is a seven days per week operation. This brings challenges in attracting, retaining and supporting high quality employees. Kirkcaldie & Stains meets these challenges in a practical way and is proud of the rapport with its employees.
The Company employs over 200 people of whom around half are full time. Part-time and casual employees are crucial for the successful staffing of a store that opens every day and often for extended hours. The fact that many members of staff have worked with the Company for decades is testament to the family atmosphere that the workforce enjoys. It follows that the Company meets all its legal and moral responsibilities in caring for and developing its staff.
Corporate history
Trading commenced in 1863 and the Company was first incorporated with limited liability in 1900. In 1931, a controlling interest was sold to British Overseas Stores, which kept its investment until selling to Renouf Corporation, a New Zealand based investment company, in 1985. Renouf suffered financial difficulties following the share market crash in 1987 and, as part of financial restructuring, was renamed Hellaby Holdings Limited. Hellaby Holdings Limited floated 49% of the share capital in 1995 through an offering to staff, customers and the general public. The balance of the shares was sold by Hellaby Holdings Limited in 1997 and 1999. The Company's staff share purchase scheme was introduced in 1997. In May 2001 Kirkcaldie & Stains Limited achieved full listing on the New Zealand Stock Exchange.
The store has become part of the Wellington psyche, a symbol of quality and durability, elegance and comfort, tradition and respectability. Even though it numbers the rich and famous among its customers (including the late Queen Mother), the store still operates under one of its founding tenets that all customers are treated with the same high standard of service.
